Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)

Measles - Acute viral illness caused by morbillivirus.

  •          Transmitted through airborne droplet spread - one of the most highly communicable infectious diseases.

Mumps - Acute viral illness caused by paramyxovirus.

  •          Transmitted through airborne droplet spread

Rubella - Mild viral illness caused by togavirus.

  • Transmitted through airborne droplet spread

Signs and Symptoms

Measles:

  •          Fever, malaise, coryza, conjunctivitis, cough.
  •          Erythematous and maculopapular rash.

Mumps:

  •          Fever, malaise, headache.
  •          Unilateral or bilateral parotid swelling.

Rubella:

  • Fever, malaise, headache, arthralgia.
  • Lymphandenopathy.
  • Maculopapular rash - commonly starts behind ears or on face and spreads head to foot (rash is fainter than measles).  

Treatment

Symptomatic treatment. For Measles, possible use of immunoglobulin (HNIG) in pregnancy or if immunocompromised.

Recommended for travellers

These diseases are still common in much of Asia, Africa the Indian sub-continent and South America. The risk is greater when living/working with the local population; particularly if in a healthcare setting or for children in areas where vaccine uptake may be poor. More recently there have been outbreaks of measles and mumps in several developed countries including the US, Canada, Japan, Israel and several European countries including the UK.
